Located in Chambers County between Beaumont and Houston, Winnie was initially established in 1895 and named after Fox Winnie, a railroad contractor who worked for the Gulf and Interstate Railway. Winnie has benefitted by the discovery of a nearby oilfield in 1941, later growing due to the construction of Interstate 10.
History & Culture
Winnie has long had a history with the railroad and oil industry. The town was originally built as a railroad town until 1911. With the discovery of oil in 1941 Glenn H. McCarthy established a gas plant to the east of town. Rice is another strong industry in the town, as the rice harvest is celebrated annually.
Transportation
Interstate 10 runs to the north of the town and is a vital transportation link to Houston to the west and Beaumont to the East. Winnie is a midpoint stop between the two cities, and residents have easy access to Houston’s airport for further domestic and international travel. Amtrak service is also available in both Beaumont and Houston.
Restaurants
Several nearby restaurants cater to a variety of tastes for our residents. You can enjoy a cup of coffee and several bakery treats at Lercy’s Café-Coffeehouse-Bakery. For something a little different Pho Express offers traditional Vietnamese Cuisine. Tony’s BBQ and Macho’s Mexican Restaurant also appeal to more traditional Texas tastes.
Things to Do
The Texas Rice Festival is an annual event that celebrates the rice harvest every year. It is community celebration jointly held with Liberty, Anahuac, Dayton, and Winnie in Winnie-Stowell Park and is a week of activities. Winnie is also home to the St. Louis Conference of St. Vincent de Paul, serving the needy and suffering in Southeast Texas.
